CHOICE Scenario #1 "The Choice of Responsibility"
The scene takes place in the waiting room of the emergency entrance at Wesleyan Memorial
Hospital where sixteen year old Monica Simms has been waiting for quite a while since her
grandmother has been admitted for unexplained seizures.
Monica's mom and dad divorced several
years ago. Monica's dad remarried; her mom was a victim of 9-11. Since there have been
issues with dad and his new wife, it was decided that Monica would move in with her
grandmother for a time.
Grandma Simms suffers from a form of diabetes brought on by high blood pressure and kidney failure.
She has been instructed to follow a strict diet, exercise and medication regiment. However, Grandma
is very stubborn and set in her ways and she does not always submit to her doctor's advice. This makes things a
bit difficult for Monica, who realizes the importance of the regimen but does not want to stir up
Grandma's anger. She likes living there and would not want to have to move back in with dad and
his new wife.
Monica's older brother Omar, who is in college and shares an apartment with friends, sometimes takes on the
role of surrogate father. He can be critical of his sister during hard times. While she continues to
anxiously wait, Omar enters with his girlfriend Chantel.
